Interpreting Strategies for Students Who Are Deafblind:

This professional development highlights specialized techniques that are used when interpreting for a student who is deafblind, has low vision, or has a reduced visual field. Participants have opportunities to practice the techniques presented in this training and learn about identifying students with deafblindness. The target audience for this training is educational interpreters.

Topical Parent Training:

OCDBE provides trainings specifically designed for parents on a variety of topics related to their child/children with deafblindness. The topics of these trainings vary and have included such topics as Orientation & Mobility, Usher Syndrome, CHARGE Syndrome, and SPARKLE.

Intervener Services Training:

The Open Hands Open Access (OHOA) online intervener modules created by the National Center on Deaf-Blindness (NCDB) are used as the basis for this training. Cohorts of teacher –paraprofessional teams and/or other teams (e.g., teachers, parents, related services providers, etc.) participate in a four-to-eight week professional development experience that provides them with relevant information for working with students with combined hearing-vision loss, or students with multiple disabilities including sensory or dual sensory loss. Intervener services professional development is structured to offer training experiences on “the basics” as well as more advanced content.


The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) is promoting a new communication system that is used by adults who are deafblind to access environmental information that is available to hearing and sighted people. Haptics uses movements and signs that are produced on the person’s arm or back to let them know what is happening in the environment (e.g., a speaker is walking around the room, there is activity or a commotion in the back of the room, the audience is laughing, etc.) without interrupting the interpretation of the speaker.

Identifying and Supporting Students with Combined Hearing-Vision Loss:

This training focuses on identifying and understanding deafblindness, as well as understanding the effects of deafblindness on student learning in the classroom. This training is particularly relevant for members of evaluation teams (e.g., school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, others) working with students with combined hearing-vision loss, students with visual or hearing impairment, and children with multiple disabilities, including sensory loss.
